Artists in Dialogue

Transforming Communities

The opening of the Res Artis 11th General Meeting in Amsterdam was performed by Ronald Plasterk - Dutch Minister of Education, Culture and Science - on the 9th of October. His speech was an inspiring start of the three day conference: Artists in Dialogue, Transforming Communities. The meeting was attended by 120 delegates from artist-in-residence programmes from all over the world, and by representatives of governments, funds and organizations related to the artist-in-residence sector. Many inspirational speakers were heard, people met in workshops and the attendees explored Amsterdam and Arnhem.

Res Artis is the largest network of artist residency centres and programmes operating internationally. Every other year its members gather to meet, to discuss issues of importance to the artist-in-residence sector.
This eleventh gathering was hosted and organized by Trans Artists - the Amsterdam based information centre for artists on international artist-in-residence opportunities. Trans Artists celebrates its 10th anniversary. Res Artis celebrates its 5th year of official registration in the Netherlands.

The program

The program highlighted smaller grass roots organizations linked to social, cultural and political contexts. These initiatives facilitate the dialogue of guest artists with local artists and the community.
The workshops focused on important topics such as residency programs creating safe havens for artists at risk, and the strategies of residential art centers to collaborate with corporations.

Art, Migration and Identity

Res Artis members visited SLAK Foundation - the biggest studio facilitating organization in the Netherlands, manages over 1000 studios for artists, cultural organizations and theatre companies.
The eleven award winning artists from Africa were beginning their collaboration with eleven Dutch artists on the theme ‘Art, Migration and Identity’ when we visited their studios. The results of their residency will be presented at IFAA (International Festival for the Arts in Arnhem)
