Makers Unite winner of Refugee Challenge!

Rewarding The Beach' sustainist design approach

Makers Unite is one of five winners of the What Design Can Do Refugee Challenge. Selected out of the staggering number of 631 entries from mixed teams all over the world! The jury handed out the price during the What Design Can Do conference in Amsterdam. The Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs Bert Koenders presented each of the five winners of the Refugee Challenge, including Makers Unite, with ten thousand euros to develop our concept further.

The jury about Makers Unite:

"This project creates new connections and dialogue through the act of making. Makers Unite brings communities together to turn the leftover debris from the humanitarian crisis, such as defunct lifejackets into meaningful new products. The jury was impressed by the idea of using a co-creation process to stimulate engagement and also to identify talent. Makers Unite has proven they have a model and a positive and infectious optimism."
